Alan Turing, the father of computer science, was a homosexual, which at his time was regarded as an illness and was illegal in England. After his conviction, he was treated with hormone injection which was used to try to cure his ‘illness’. In 1954, two years after his arrest, he committed suicide and died at the age of 41.
There were also theories claiming he might have been killed. But if he did kill himself, he might have deliberately chosen a way to end his life to send a message to the world—by eating an apple containing cyanide. Apples in the Bible represents forbidden love. Isaac Newton was hit by a falling apple, which represents knowledge. Snow White went to a deep sleep because she ate a poisoned apple. After his time, Apple Computers was founded with its logo featuring an apple with a bite taken out. Some believes this was an homage to Alan Turing (me included).
Charles Petzold wrote a new book about Alan Turing recently and a blog article about Alan Turing and gay rights. The article is an interesting read and gives me some background on the anti-homosexual law back then and its recent trend. The most astounding thing he mentioned in the article was the logic of the people who oppose gay marriage—there was hardly any.
I personally feel that there is still a long way to go in protecting people with different lifestyles. Actually I feel threatened by the political agenda of the various christian organisations who strives to eliminate homosexuals. I suggest those who are computer science students or those who are interested in knowing more about the issue to read the blog article.
